If you don’t like the look of hay mulch you can always put a little bark or some other mulch over the top but beware some can leach toxins that can be detrimental to the plants.

Mulch is very important for plants, young or old, large or small, it helps keep the roots cool and moist in the hot dry days and warmer in the winter. We find hay mulch to be one of the best,
it may not be the most attractive and it may not last as long as some others but it does help condition the ground.
This young plant is surrounded by a good thick 100mm plus layer of hay mulch.
This is an example of aged wood based mulch over the hay.
